My Approach

Benefits and Approach

At Fourth River Holistic, I believe your body communicates its needs through sensations—each ache, tension, or moment of tightness is a message waiting to be heard. Over my 25+ years in massage therapy, I’ve seen firsthand how deeply the bodymind connection can influence every aspect of our lives. Whether the tension is physical, emotional, or even chemical, our daily habits—whether from repetitive motion at work, the demands of raising a child, or habitual postures—can create blockages that keep us from living in a state of flow.

Therapeutic massage is more than a moment of relaxation; it’s a gateway to reclaiming that flow. By releasing these held tensions, massage not only alleviates pain but also clears the way for greater self-awareness and integration. Each session is a collaborative dialogue between your body and my therapeutic touch, designed to remove the blockages that cloud your inner clarity. This process supports your natural ability to breathe, move, and live with ease, aligning the physical with the emotional so you can truly thrive.

My approach blends the art and science of touch, drawing on decades of experience in varied, professional settings. I create a safe, respectful space where boundaries are maintained, yet the depth of healing is allowed to unfold uniquely for each client. Here, the benefits of massage emerge gradually—reducing stress, easing muscle tension, and paving the way for both physical and emotional renewal. Every session is tailored to your individual needs, ensuring that the therapeutic release you receive is as unique as your body’s story.

The Healing Power of Touch

Throughout my 25+ years in massage therapy, I’ve witnessed how the sensations within our bodies are messages—signals that reveal our emotional, physical, and even chemical states. When tension accumulates, be it from repetitive work, the demands of parenting, or habitual postures, it not only strains our muscles but also clouds our awareness, hindering our ability to live in a graceful, natural flow. This is where therapeutic massage becomes transformative.

Massage isn’t simply about alleviating muscle pain; it’s a pathway to release the pressures that obstruct our inner awareness. Our day-to-day actions—how we express ourselves, the physical exertions of our work, or even the compensations our bodies make for weak muscles—all add layers of tension. When these layers aren’t released, they block our ability to connect with the subtle signals of our body. A mindful session can clear these blockages, restoring the flow of energy and allowing both physical and emotional integration to occur.

My approach recognizes that every twinge or ache is part of a larger conversation your body is having with you. With each focused, intentional touch, I help guide your body toward a state of balance and clarity. This process not only offers relief from physical discomfort but also nurtures mental and emotional well-being, supporting the experience of  living and breathing in a state of effortless flow, even if the sensation last just a while.

The Art of Communication in Massage Therapy

Massage is more than a physical experience; it’s an energetic exchange, a weaving of trust and connection between therapist and client. For some, this begins with words—a natural flow of conversation that creates a sense of ease and familiarity. Others find their comfort in silence, allowing the sensations of touch to speak for themselves. As a therapist, my role is to honor your unique way of being, creating a space where you feel seen and supported.

We are all deeply intuitive beings, attuned to the subtle energies of safety and connection. In our sessions, I hold space for you to “be how you be,” whether that means sharing your thoughts or simply resting in quiet presence. For some, voicing observations during the massage can deepen their awareness and integration. For others, the cocoon of silence is where healing unfolds most profoundly. My intention is always to meet you where you are, sensing what will best support your journey.

Above all, communication is key to ensuring your comfort and well-being. I encourage you to share if any touch feels uncomfortable, painful, or not positive for you. Likewise, I remain attuned to your body’s responses—whether it’s pulling away or holding tension—and adjust the amount of pressure, or my approach to guide you toward release and relaxation. Together, we create a therapeutic space where your body’s needs are heard and honored.

How to Breathe During a Massage: Enhancing the Bodymind Connection

Breathing is one of the simplest yet most powerful tools we have to deepen the benefits of massage therapy. During a session, your breath acts as a bridge between your body and mind, helping you release tension, increase awareness, and fully embrace the healing process.  So, find the space between your breaths, and the feeling of letting your breath breathe you!

Breathing Into Sensation

As you receive a massage, you may notice certain areas of your body “light up” with sensation. These are often places where tension has been held, sometimes for years. By consciously breathing into these areas, you can invite a sense of release and relaxation. Visualize your breath as a gentle wave, flowing into the tightness and carrying it away with each exhale. This practice not only supports the physical release of tension but also strengthens the connection between your body and mind.

Visualization and Awareness

Along with breathing, visualization can enhance your experience. As you focus on the area being massaged, imagine it softening and expanding with each breath. Sense the energy shifting and the tension dissolving. This mindful awareness helps you tune into your body’s natural rhythms and fosters a deeper sense of integration and healing, as you acknowledge sensation with the hello of breath.

Targeted Breathing Techniques

At times, I may guide you to direct your breath to specific areas of your body. For example, breathing into your eye sockets can help release tension in the face and head, while focusing on your posterior heart space can open up the upper back and shoulders. Similarly, directing your breath to areas like the ischial tuberosities (sitting bones) can support the release of deep-seated tension in the hips and pelvis. These techniques are designed to align your breath with the therapeutic work, amplifying its effects.

The Power of Presence

Above all, the key to breathing during a massage is presence. There’s no right or wrong way to breathe—what matters is that you remain connected to the sensations in your body and allow your breath to guide you. Whether you’re breathing deeply into a specific area or simply letting your breath flow naturally, this practice invites a sense of ease and openness that enhances the healing process.  By the end of the massage, I care most that you have had an opportunity to let go of your mind, and even the process of breathing.  Let your breath breathe you.  Breathing actually happens without effortlessly!

Before Your Session:

Each massage begins with a brief consultation in the massage room, where we discuss your needs, preferences, and any areas of focus or concern. After our conversation, I will step out of the room to allow you privacy as you prepare for the session. When you’re ready, simply signal by inviting me back in, when I knock, to come in, and start the massage therapy treatment.

Draping and Comfort:

Your comfort is my priority. You may choose to keep your underwear on or be nude under the sheet—whatever feels most comfortable for you. In accordance with state regulations, you will always be draped with a sheet, and only the areas being worked on will be uncovered during the massage.

There are times, the drape may move, and I will check in with you and advise you on the work we are doing, doing my best to keep your modesty in mind and adhere to professional boundaries, while releasing the muscle tension.  I also check in with you about temperature, offering a blanket or adjusting the table warmer to ensure you feel cozy and ready to relax.

These practices are designed to create a space where you can fully relax and trust in the therapeutic process, knowing your well-being is always my top priority.  Do not hesitate to let me know, you need to make an adjustment to your body posture on the table, a pillow, or more blankets.  I am here to support a wonderful massage experience from the get-go.

Before You Arrive:

If at all possible, arrive freshly showered.  Begin by taking a few moments to ground yourself. As you anticipate your session, allow your breath to center you—a few slow, deep inhales and exhales set the stage for a journey of relaxation and healing. In our initial consultation, we’ll discuss your areas of tension and any preferences you might have. After our brief chat in the therapy room, I step out so you can prepare in privacy. When you’re ready, simply signal by inviting me back in, when I knock on the door.

During the Session:

As the massage unfolds, your breath becomes a powerful ally. When you notice a particular area feeling tense or “lighting up” with sensation, try breathing into that space. Imagine each inhale carrying fresh energy into the area, while each exhale gently releases built‑up tension. Sometimes, you might find it helpful to visualize the tension dissolving, or even focus your breath on specific areas—whether it’s your eye sockets, posterior heart space, or the muscles around your ischial regions.

These targeted breathing techniques not only release physical tension but also strengthen the dialogue between your body and mind, by giving friendly acknowledgment to that place in your body, holding the tension for you.

Your comfort throughout this experience is essential. There’s no right or wrong way to breathe—simply allow your breath to guide you into a state of presence. Whether through silence or gentle conversation, this nurturing environment is designed to help you feel seen and supported.

Integration and Beyond:

The benefits of these mindful breathing practices often extend well beyond the session. As your muscles relax and your mind quiets down, the subtle power of your breath helps integrate the experience, leaving you with a sense of balance and calm that carries into your daily life. In this way, each massage becomes not only an act of physical care but a holistic journey that honors the intricate connection between your body, mind, and spirit.
